Live BPA-Free with Barlii Brand Dry Bags
Barlii Brands is dedicated to being part of a better future for the world, to being part of the solution to the massive, harmful chemicals that fill our world today causing innumerable harms, many we are only beginning to grasp the seriousness of. Our small part is fueled by promoting TPU plastic over products containing BPA’s. It’s very likely that you’ll be hearing more and more about TPU plastic. TPU plastic is a phthalate-free plastic that is highly versatile and satisfies many needs that have been filled by plastics that we now know are bad for us. The main culprit we’ll be focusing on is PVC plastic.
What is PVC?
PVC is polyvinyl chloride and according to Wikipedia, is the third most produced plastic material. When you hear PVC, you might think of white piping that is used for plumbing. However, PVC is used for bottles, credit cards, children’s toys, and food packaging. It is ever-present we are unaware of it in our everyday lives. As with many items that fill our modern lives, we are slowly becoming aware of the dangers of PVC to human health and the health of the planet. The part of the chemical equation that people are being warned about is BPA, a phthalate. Phthalates are added to the mix to soften what would otherwise be a hard plastic. Think of a child’s rubber duckie. The flexibility of that plastic, versus a hard plumbing pipe is the result of BPA. A miracle product right? Well, not so much. The cost we are paying for softening plastics is becoming more and more apparent, though there is still much to learn.
The Environmental Costs of BPA
From the fact that PVC is a petroleum product to the creation of harmful dioxins and heavy metals, to the difficulty in recycling and disposing of PVC, this product is riddled with environmental problems. PVC also leaches harmful chemicals into the direct environment, meaning the users. This means when your three-year-old puts that BPA-containing rubber duckie into their mouth, they are introducing chemicals that can harm their long-term health directly into their bodies. We can and will be, discussing at length, the dangers of PVC and their endocrine interrupting functions, and their suspected connection to autism. But pointing out a problem is only half the battle, we must also come up with solutions. One solution to the problems caused by PVC and BPA is TPU.
The Alternative is TPU
Thermoplastic Polyurethane is a pliable form of plastic that doesn’t contain BPA’s and is highly versatile. It’s tough, cold-resistant, highly elastic and durable. No chemicals are emitted during its manufacturing or use. One great use of this plastic is dry bags as made by Barlii Brands. These bags are watertight and perfect for outdoor activities like camping and river rafting.
